The Government of the Czech Republic will host a "Holocaust Era Assets Conference” in Prague on June 26-30 2009.

The objectives of the conference are:

  • - 
    To assess the progress made since the 1998 Washington Conference on Holocaust Era Assets in the areas of the recovery of looted art and objects of cultural, historical  and religious value and in the areas of property restitution and financial compensation schemes.
  • - 
    To review current practices regarding provenance research and restitution and, where needed, define new effective instruments to improve these efforts. 
  • - 
    To review the impact of the Stockholm Declaration of 2000 on education, remembrance and research about the Holocaust.
  • - 
    To strengthen the work of the Task Force on International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research.
  • - 
    To discuss new, innovative approaches in education, social programs and cultural initiatives related to the Holocaust and other National Socialist wrongs and to advance religious and ethnic tolerance in our societies and the world.

Tsjechisch voorzitterschap Europese Unie 1e helft 2009

Van 1 januari t/m 31 juni 2009 vervulde Tsjechië het voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie i. Het Tsjechisch voorzitterschap richtte zich op de landen ten oosten van de Europese Unie. Ook de kredietcrisis en klimaatverandering, alsmede het Verdrag van Lissabon, speelden het half jaar een belangrijke rol.

Centrale thema's en voornemens waren:

  • - 
    Schone energie en de energievoorziening: Tsjechië wil het voorgestelde klimaat- en energiepakket uitwerken en vastleggen. Tevens moet het beleid ten aanzien van de energiezekerheid worden verstevigd.
  • - 
    Financiën van de EU: er is een evaluatie gaande van de systematiek van de inkomsten en uitgaven van de Europese Unie. De Commissie i zal haar bevindingen aan de Europese Raad i presenteren.
  • - 
    Kredietcrisis: verder werken aan een Europese en internationale aanpak om de crisis te beteugelen. Een herziening van het systeem van kredietwaardering was reeds ingepland.
  • - 
    Oostelijke landen: Tsjechië wil een Europese top met de oostelijke buurlanden en landen uit de Kaukasus. Rusland is vooralsnog niet in die lijst opgenomen.
